Special Care

 Special Care Unit

North Adams Home’s Special Care Unit, also known as SCU, is a homelike, loving environment devoted to meeting the physical, psychological, spiritual well-being needs of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.

Our Special Care Unit is a cozy, intimate neighborhood that accommodates 16 individuals, Medicare certified, offering both private and semi-private rooms. Rooms are of a light tan neutral pallet adorned with oak crown molding providing the perfect canvas for personalizing. Residents are encouraged to bring their favorite furnishings or decorations from home.  Individual cooling/heating units allow temperature adjustments according to the resident’s comfort level.

Nurses and caregivers are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to address resident medical and personal care needs. These professionals work closely with other disciplines including each resident’s physician to ensure the best possible overall health and well-being.

Our SCU is home to a spacious dining room, where seating is limited to four per table providing opportunity for comfortable social interaction. Special diet needs are carefully planned and monitored. Residents are encouraged and assisted with making meal selection choices through nutritionally balanced menus.

The Activity Program

Activity programming is designed by full time certified activity personnel according to each individual’s abilities, interests and life experiences. The SCU houses a spacious activity room with large windows perfect for viewing the outdoors and a covered patio which leads to a secure courtyard area for those who desire the outdoors. Special community outings are planned as well. The activity calendar offers something for everyone!

Ruth Ann Scott (center) is a favorite volunteer in our Special Care Unit.
